Daggerheart Domain Card System

Daggerheart Domain Card System

I do like Daggerheart as a game system a lot. It gives a lot of player agency while still providing a formal ruleset for the GM to take over, the fear mechanic. The more fear that is built up, the more dangerous it gets for the party. This creates an exceptionally intense tug of war.

But there is one problem that I have with Daggerheart, that is its table setup. It involves cards, cards that can be swapped, picked from a pile, swapped during combat, and some are permanently attached to the players. There is a big problem with that.

The problem is in providing players with the all the information they need at a glance, without getting them confused. There are ancestry cards, background cards, domain cards. They come in a printable PDF format when you buy the books. The problem however, is that, it takes quite a bit of effort to create those cards physically, giving everyone their copy of the cards etc. There is a web-app to deal with this, Deminplane. But the webapp is extremely slow and badly designed. And on top of that most folks I play with, in person, do not want to have a screen open, which I appreciate.

Currently players on my table, do not engage with these systems enough; and I think it is because of my badly cut single copy of all the cards. They do not look at the cards enough. I think it is just hard to handle those tiny pieces of paper. And on top of that, they look similar, and to use them also means they have to remember which domains they have access to etc. I need players to be engaged with the story and the game, and not fiddling with all the stupid cards in front of them, and remember all the rules over weeks, not months. This is a completely unrealistic ask, if I may be so bold.

Maybe this game is designed for seasoned TTRPG players, but I believe it can be solved with a little bit technology, and I absolutely love the game! I want to solve this problem, by creating a tool that can print out all the relevant information in a neatly arranged manner. We do not even need the cards. I envy people who can take the effort, print the cards in thick card stock, laminate them, give to their players. I will not do that, and as much I like the card system as a interface generally for other games, it does not help if each class card set are 25 dollars a copy. And on top of that, giving players all the cards will require them to remember what is valid and what is not for then current subclass etc. I want to make it as easy as possible. So I want to create a tool that I can easily use to create PDFs with all the relevant information at a glance for a given class / subclass / ancestry / background. Just enough, not more so that players do not get overloaded with figuring out what they even have access to. For example, sage and bones domain, good luck figuring out which symbol is what; to dig through a pile of other cards.

Basically the idea would be to create a tool where I can choose their ancestry, background, class, sub-class and all the relevant information, those will get printed out in a infographic form, including all the domain cards they have access to in their current level. This is a rather new kind of project for me; I want create computer-generated printable designs all that information easily digestible, to complement the official printable game material; And I am not a designer.

But I cannot wait.
